2. Processing Description 
2.1 ACID CONDITIONING AND NEUTRALIZATION


The feedstock enters the plant at a controlled rate and is heated to about 70 oC by neutralized oil in Feed Economizer or by steam in the Feed Heater during the start-up. Phosphoric acid is injected at a controlled rate and intensively contacted with the oil in the Acid Mixer , later on, the mixture is retained in the acid reaction tank for some time to ensure completely to transfer NHP into HP. These materials are later removed together with the soapstock formed during neutralization. 

The acid conditioned oil is reacted with caustic soda solution injected at a controlled rate in the Neutralizing Inter-Mixer and the retention mixer . The lye neutralizes the free fatty acids and the excess of mineral acid in the oil forming soapstock. In the retention mixer the oil is agitated very slowly in order to make sure that the water-soluble gums form larger lumps. The oil/soapstock mixture flows from the retention tank by pressure and is then heated in the heater. The soapstock together with excess caustic solution and other impurities are removed in the Soapstock Separator .

WATER WASHING AND DRYING

The washed oil contains about 0.5% of water.  If the oil will go directly to bleaching, the wet oil can preferably be transferred to the bleaching section directly without removal of the dissolved water.

2.2 Bleaching

The neutralized oil is heated to around 110ºC by deodorized oil in the Bleaching Economizer or by steam in Bleaching Heater and small part of it is mixed with bleaching earth in a static mixer and the most part is sprayed into the top compartment of the Bleacher which operates under vacuum.  Here it is dried and mixed with bleaching earth further. The earth is automatically proportioned by the hermetic Earth Proportioning System directly from the Earth Feed Hopper into the static mixer and further enters Bleacher via a pipe located below the oil spray to prevent dust from entering the vacuum system. The Earth Proportioning System is based on two automated butterfly valves with an intermediate dosing chamber. The valves are sequenced by an adjustable timer system in the control panel.

In the Bleacher, which is equipped with steam agitated compartments to ensure proper mixing and retention time, the color bodies and oxidizing materials, etc. in the oil are gradually absorbed by the earth. The oil then flows by an overflow pipe to Bleaching Buffer Tank which is also steam agitated to ensure proper mixing.


2.3 Deodorizing
Deodorization is an absolute necessity in processing edible fats and oils. How efficiently it is done determines what you can achieve in your processing operations as a whole, in terms of removing odours, pigments and volatile substances.

When processing edible vegetable oils and animal fats, it is crucially important to remove any undesirable compounds
that can affect flavour, odour, stability and colour. Deodorization is a vacuum steam distillation process in which steam is passed through such oils at very low pressure and relatively high temperature in order to remove any such substances still present after the preceding processing stages.
